OLD - Week 1 Day 4 Evening

The sun dipped below the horizon and was replaced by the moon, its separated hemispheres grinning down on the denizens of earth. Seth and Ellyn trundled into town on the cart, the few people still out and about looking up at them and the cart before moving on. Everyone was much quieter, the cool evening breeze stealing words from conversations that never happened. The light from the tall Byronite lamps placed around town. Ellyn looked up at the clouds of insects that surrounded the lamps and wondered what they would be saying if they could speak. Seth looked up at the clouds of insects that surrounded the lamps and wondered how he could make use of this. Acorn looked up at the clouds of insects that surrounded the lamps and wondered why the fuzzy dots like the shiny so much. Seth stopped off outside a baker and bought some lumps of bread, and they continued out of town.
Once back in the protective cover of the forest Seth stopped the cart once more and set up the camp for the night. As Ellyn combined the bread with the various left overs, Seth tended to his cart, applying tape to some structural insecurities. They ate in silence as both were worn out with the day’s activities. Even Acorn immediately fell asleep in his hanging perch.
Seth strung up the hammocks and closed the canvas over the cart. They both then dropped themselves into the hammocks and fell asleep quickly.
That night Ellyn dreamed of adventure, a formidable journey that she and Seth had just finished.
That night Seth dreamed of eating a tonne of food and exploding into bacon, which he then somehow also ate.

That night Acorn didn’t dream. Acorn was awake after a few hours of sleep. Acorn was ready for the hunt.

OLD - Week 1 Day 7 Morning

Seth shook Ellyn awake and held a hand over her mouth so she wouldn’t make a noise; he put a finger to his lips to tell her to be quiet. He moved off her and she looked around, the others were crouched low, the fire had been kicked out. About 50 metres from where they were, Ellyn could see a group of the tan uniformed men, moving between the trees, they hadn’t see them yet,  Julian signed to move away, into a set of nearby bushes, that would conceal them. They slowly pushed through the line of bushes the sound of twigs snapping was worryingly loud, but the patrol seemed to not notice. They waited on baited breath so see if they noticed them. There was a shout, the patrol turned to them, and ran over towards them but they stopped at what was left of their camp. “Looks like they were here, they must be somewhere nearby!” one of the men said Ellyn started to shuffle back but Dahveed stopped her and shook his head. “No shit num-nuts” one of the men said to the other. “Let’s ...

HMSS Pangolin Prime Chapter 6

Chapter 6 I was glad of the similar designs, it definitely made getting around easier, I guess new crew members got given a map as there were no signs. I floated around, until i had found what I was looking for, the engineering bay opened from a small door in a thin corridor. The engineering bay itself was a large room, with the walls and most of the floor space being covered by machinery. I made my way to the main terminal, which was set into a large semi circular console, extra buttons and levers to check  it over and unsurprisingly it was powered off. It was a simple matter to re-boot the generator, a flick of this switch, a twiddle of that knob and it roared back into action. Life re-entered the ship and it shuddered with the addition of power, the lights came on illuminating the until now dark interior. The alarms also came on, creating a cacophony of noise, I made my way back the console and found a flashing red button labeled with “Alarms”, I pressed it and the alarms s...

Artificial Ignorance - Part of the Casual Collection of Catastrophes Volume 2

It was my 143rd birthday, the holo cake still managed to fit all of the candles. I stood in the lounge with my friends and family, my parents came all the way across the ocean to my habitat just to celebrate my birthday. They had to hire a special drone to fly them across, they did live 50 years before the singularity after all. My sister made the joke that they are nearly more nanomachines than person at this point. The act of giving gifts at birthdays phased out a long time ago, since everyone lives so long now, even my grandmother, who lived most of her life before it happened, made it to 203rd birthday! I mean, they cured cancer within the first five years after the singularity. The year is now 127 PS, PS standing for Post Singularity. The oceans have risen and most of the 12 billion people of the earth live on habitats which float on the surface of the ocean. The lunar bases are restricted to qualified professionals ever since the “Grey Lung” epidemic of 120 PS and the few space...
